The Cana Lakota Medical school’s purpose is to support current and revive traditional Lakota lifestyle. In teaching traditional Lakota and today’s modern medicine, with taking care of the village and its people approach. This would not be a degree program, but a rekindling of traditions. Everything is still a great work in progress but moving forward.
The history starts with: Since the mid to late 1800’s the northeast corner of the present state of Wyoming was promised to serve as a reservation to the tribe. The area indicated was from the Wyoming-South Dakota border to the Bighorn mountains. This is why the main location for the proposed school is set to be in either Johnson or Sheridan County, Wyoming. The area would fit its purpose in two areas:
1. The land used for the school would be in the same area as the original promised treaty. Historically, this is important to the Lakota nation as part of a treaty would be acknowledged and honored.
2. The area would also serve its purpose with the mountains and valley areas. There areas are still able to sustain and thrive life over 170 years from the initial promise in today’s modernization. Providing areas for animals to graze and water nearby, the Bighorn mountains are a very resourceful area to educate here.
The Initial staff will include several teachers (hunting, bow and arrow, quill work, music, equine) to name a few. The role of the teachers does not change and encompasses as it did in the 1800s, to have all students be providers and protectors. The property will also maintain a ranch/farm. Year-round green houses for healthy diets. There will be joint operating between both and students may assist in those areas are part of the modern learning process.
